Popular Film Genres

ABOUT THE CLASS

This course surveys the development of one major film genre—such as action movies, comedies, or musicals—which we will examine from cultural, technological, aesthetic, and economic perspectives.  The course also serves as an introduction to film history and the key principles of film analysis.  We will consider current theories of how genres are constructed, defined, and used by filmmakers and viewers.  Through detailed viewings of contemporary and classic movies (both foreign and domestic) we will also investigate conventions of narrative structure, character, star persona, and film style, as well as the genre's appeal to audiences and its significance as a cultural form.

The official title for this semester-long elective class is "Film: The Integrated Art."  It satisfies a G requirement for graduation.
